Imjeong Choi
Born in South Korea, Imjeong Choi began her musical journey by earning awards as a soloist from the Baroque Concours and Music Education News Concours. She delved into her musical explorations through both orchestra concerts and chamber concerts, showing her versatility and passion.
Imjeong earned a Bachelor of Music Performance from Hanyang University and a second degree in Music Education, which granted her a Secondary School Teacher of Music certificate. During this time, she was a member of Seoul Metropolitan Youth Orchestra and served as a substitute for the Jeonju City Symphony Orchestra. She also expanded her teaching methods and taught cello at Boseong Girl’s Middle school and interned as a music teacher at Muhak Middle School. Additionally, she provided cello lessons at Haendang Central Church and the Wisemusic Institute.
Continuing her education in the United States, Imjeong achieved both a Doctor of Musical Arts and a Master of Music in Cello Performance at Michigan State University where she studied with Suren Bagratuni. During this period, she worked at the Ohio Light Opera in 2019 and she participated in the Summer Study Abroad program in Todi, Italy, where she performed in 2018.
Imjeong built her teaching career by teaching students as a teaching assistant at Michigan State University and working as a cello instructor at Marshall Music Company. Also, she taught chamber groups at the Emerald Isle String Haven Camp.
As an active orchestra musician, Imjeong toured Hong Kong, China, Philippines, Taiwan, and Japan as a member of Asian Youth Orchestra. In Michigan, she was a member of Lansing Symphony, Jackson Symphony, and Midland Symphony orchestras. Additionally, she was selected as an Associate member of the Chicago Civic Orchestra for the season 2021/2022.
In addition to her involvement in classical music, Imjeong also works in contemporary music. She has played premiere works, including a cello solo piece, string quartets, string trios and orchestral compositions written by students and faculty members at Michigan State University.
Imjeong Choi is now excited to be in Texas, where she continues to pursue her musical career and teaching endeavors.
